If you have a child with Down Syndrome, you may know that 50% of individuals with Down Syndrome have an eye disease. Down Syndrome impacts the development of the eyes and therefore a person's vision.
Common eye issues found in individuals with Down Syndrome include nearsightedness and farsightedness as well as tear duct abnormalities, focusing power, and eye misalignment. These issues can be treated easily when caught early but can lead to more severe issues if left untreated.
Although a young child with Down Syndrome may not be able to tell you he is having trouble seeing, some common signs of an issue are eyelid droop, sensitivity to light, head tilt or wandering eyes.
NVISION Eye Centers has put together a resource specifically about this topic entitled Eyesight & Down Syndrome. Take a look if you'd like to learn more!
